Welcome to Class 2 - Year 1/2
A very warm welcome to Class 2 with Mrs Davies, Mrs Haines and Mrs Hagan. Here you will find out some information about our timetable, homework and general school routines.
The curriculum in Class 2 will continue to develop children’s skills, knowledge and understanding. The core elements of their learning are centred around English, Maths, Science and RE. Excellent progress in these areas will provide a strong foundation for development in other areas.
Homework
In Year 2, the children will receive a piece of Maths, Reading Comprehension or Grammar homework over each week. Homework is sent out on a Friday and needs to be completed on time and returned by the following Thursday.
In Year 1, the children will recieve Maths or Reading Comprehension homework every Friday. We expect Year 5 homework to be completed on time and returned the following Thursday.
Homework is designed to consolidate learning and provide children with an opportunity to practise key skills. Most children should be able to complete it independently. We do expect the homework to be completed to the same standard as the work in class.
Reading
It is expected that your child reads for at least 15 minutes per day. The importance and value of reading regularly are enormous. In Year 2, your child will take an Accelerated Reader Test to establish their reading level, and will then choose books from the school library at the appropriate level. Once the book is finished they will complete a Star Reader test to assess their comprehension of what they have read. When the children reach a certain level they are able to select books from home to read, or from the school library. In Year 1, we set reading books which match their current learning and ability in Phonics.
Spellings
The children will have weekly spellings to practise at home. Spellings will be tested on a Thursday and new spellings are set on a Friday. Spelling homework is set on EdShed each week.
